3. Edge of Eon (Eon Warriors #1)

Eve's ship and crew are attacked crash landed on a brutal planet called Hunter7. Eve finds herself forced to work together with her enemy, Davion to survive the dangerous planet.

It's a really fun read with witty banter and characters that come to life off the page. A fan favorite part of the story is the ever-changing planet, Hunter7. It mirrors that of a video game made to test its players to their limits.

4. Fated Blades (Kinsmen #3)

Ilona Andrews - 2021

Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must work together to protect their planet from further destruction and find they have more in common than the planet they live on.

One of the new books on this list, Ilona Andrews installment from her Kinsmen series was published last year. It's a real page turner that I think you'll find hard to put down. Though a version of Romeo and Juliet, I found the kickass aspect of it to be a fun twist on the common story.

5. Finders Keepers

Linnea Sinclair - 2005

Down on her luck and her prospects looking bleak, Trilby Elliot finds a very valuable crash landed military craft. Maybe the salvaged ship can bring her profits and a promise of a better life? But the problem is the pilot, Rhis, is still alive and intent on keeping possession of his ship... And there's more to Rhis than he lets on.

This one's a good blend for SF romance readers. The world building is an ear worm - you'll be thinking of it long after you finish the book. The science included and space fighting will satisfy SF readers who may generally not enjoy a classic romance book.

6. Fortune’s Pawn (Paradox #1)

Rachel Bach - 2013

Devi Morris is a mercenary with big plans. She'll make a name for herself. She earns a job on "The Glorious Fool" a ship aptly named for it's propensity for getting into trouble. Devi must work for a year on the ship, but this security might be more than she can handle.

This is Rachel Bach's first book in her series called Paradox. If you're looking for a book with mystery and plot twists then look no further. The book has loveable main characters and light sci-fi (not hard and technical).

7. Gabriel's Ghost

Linnea Sinclair & Megan Sybil Baker - 2005

Gabriels-Ghost

A highly respected former captain, Chasidah Bergren is charged with crimes she didn't commit. The trial ends with her sentenced time on a prison planet. With the help of a rogue pirate named Gabriel Sullivan, she escapes the planet and sets out to save innocent women from being bred and slaughtered. The mission puts their lives at risk and heats up the romantic tensions between Babriel and Chasidah.

If you're looking for true sci fi romances with a heavy emphasis on the romance, Gabriel's Ghost fits the bill. It is an intense, action-packed romance that takes the reader into a world of redemption, love, and rescue.

8. Grimspace (Sirantha Jax #1)

Grimspace

Sirantha Jax has a talent that makes her a highly sought out asset for the corporation. Her talent is being able to jump ships through grimspace. She's the navigator everyone wants. After everyone dies in a crash landing, she finds herself rescued by a group of rogue fighters. But her rescuers have a price: Overthrow the establishment.

If you're looking for a well-written narrative with fast-paced action, then pick up your copy of Grimspace by Ann Aguirre. It's first novel in a series called Sirantha Jax. Our favorite aspect of it is how it artfully avoided many of the sci-fi romance cliches.

9. Jaran

Kate Elliott - 2002

Jaran

The Chapalii empire controls a string of planets. Tess Soerensen is far too familiar with the unpredictable ways of the alien rulers. In the process of finding herself, she ends up tangled with a rebellious and nomadic people called. She herself challenged by the tribal people and drawn to their leader, Ilya.

If you're looking for multi-dimensional characters that buck the troupes, then pick up this flick from Kate Elliott. Though sci-fi related, the book is light on the technical and futuristic aspects of the world. The focus is on the characters and narrative.

10. The Last Hour of Gann

R. Lee Smith - 2013

Uyane Meoraq is a holy being. He is God's hand of judgment on the world. Amber Bierce is headed back to earth on a "Sleeper" ship. She wakes mid-journey to wreckage on an unknown planet. Their meeting tests each of them and strikes up an unlikely love story.

Word of warning: This is edging toward erotica. If that's not your thing, I don't recommend this read. The cultures are complex. The plot is engaging with plenty of action. The strange-to-use creatures are impressively described.

11. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

Becky Chambers - 2014

Rosemary Harper joins a crew on an old ship called Wayfarer. She's quickly thrown into the haywire ways of the captain and crew. The Wayfarer takes on a job that will put the crew's life on the line and depend on each other.

It's a fun story about misfits who come together to face down injustice and wrongdoings in their sphere of influence. The characterizations are diverse both in species and in the humans who populate the pages.

12. Mrs. Caliban

Rachel Ingalls - 1982

Dorothy lives in a quiet suburb with a decidedly cooled marriage. It's announced a monster has escaped the Institute of Oceanographic Research. The monster shows up at Dorothy's door. What will come of the amphibian and the housewife?

Mrs. Caliban is a novella, not a full length novel (only 125 pages). But don't let that warn you off. These pages are packed with startling twists and quaint charm.

Especially the doctor.

J.M. Link is well-loved in the sci-fi romance community and she does it again with Saving Askara. The story is a slow-burn romance with an amazing heroine.

16. Shards of Honor (Vorkosigan Saga #1)

Lois McMaster Bujold - 1991
